Pip realizes that Estella is Drummles main suitor, and that he has no shot with her. This makes Pip feel distant from Estella when he sais, "I gave given the one chapter to the theme that so filled my heart, and so often made it ache and ache again."(312) Estella has succesfully broken Pips heart, however this may have positive effects on Pip. For instance, most everything Pip has dont to this point of the book was for Estella. Now though, Estella may no longer have that influence over Pip, allowing Pip to start making decisions based on his own interests, and move on in life. Estella on the other hand, seems content with breaking people's hearts because she clearly breaks Pips heart by choosing Drummle as her suitor, since she knew what the outcome of that choice would be. Even though Estella has a bad relationship with Miss Havisham I still believe that she will continue breaking hearts since thats what she was raised to do.

I am qualifying this comment. I believe that Pip and Estella will both greatly change after these realizations. Pip has learned that Estella is just not meant for him, and it would be best for him to move on, and forget about Estella. "Miss Havisham's intentions towards me, all a mere dream; Estella not designed for me"(323). Pip has decided to move forward in life and look for someone who truly loves him, not judging someone solely on their looks. He's learned that people don't always act the way they appear.
ReplyDeleteThe one thing that I don't agree with is the fact that Estella will never change, and she will always break men's hearts. Estella has realized that Miss Havisham has been brainwashing her all along, and Estella will try to change. "Mother, I have said that I owe everything to you. All that you have given me, is at your command to have again. Beyond that, I have nothing"(304). Estella learns that she needs to stop being evil to men, or she will never find true love in her life.
I also qualify this statement. I agree with you that Pip's expectations have been crushed because upon discovering that Magwitch is his benefactor because he can no longer marry Estella. He says, Miss Havisham's intentions towards me, all a mere dream; Estella not designed for me; I only suffered in the Satis House as a convenience, a sting for the greedy relations, a model with a mechanical heart to practice on when no other practice at hand." (p.323). Although Pip's heart is broken, I think that Estella will still have influence over Pip. It is very hard for Pip to move on after he finds out he can not marry Estella, All he can think about is Estella and he keeps being reminded of her. In fact, Pip even goes back to Mr. Jaggers and makes sure that Magwitch is his benefactor and not Magwitch. Pip has a small hope that somehow something has gone wrong and Miss Havisham is his benefactor. "I am not so unreasonable, sir, as to think you at all responsible for my mistakes and wrong conclusions; but I always supposed it was Miss Havisham." (p.335) In addition, I also disagree with the fact that Estella will continue on breaking men's hearts. I think that Estella wants to learn how to love as she realizes that Miss Havisham has made he into who she is. "I am what you have made me. Take all the praise, take all the blame; take all the successes, take all the failure; in short, take me." (p.304). Also, Estella realizes that she can not love because of what Miss Havisham has taught her which is why she can't love Miss Havisham. I think that Estella realizes all the wrongs that Miss Havisham has taught her and she wants to change them, however she can't. She says, "I cannot think, why you should be so unreasonable when I come to see you after a separation. I have never forgotten all your wrongs and causes." (p.305). As you can see, Estella realizes all the wrong Miss Havisham has taught her and she wishes she would be able to change them and love, but she can't. I think Estella wants to change but can't because of how much Miss Havisham has taught her. Therefore, she will not continue on breaking men's hearts. I also think that she won't continue on breaking men's hearts because she is getting married to Drummle, making her off limits to all other men. Drummle has successfully courted her.
